2 Oxton Artists running workshops for children at Oxton Art Fair

Liz Hadwin Glover and Desdemona McCannon spent a happy afternoon making paper crocodiles, trees, angels, and coming up with story 'ingredients' for art activities for this years Oxton Art Fair, Although they are both not showing their work this year, they are looking forward to running the shadow puppet workshops between 2 and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday in the central room. These workshops will involve children working in small groups and creating a story and puppets that they will perform on their shadow stage.

Mark Wayne Barrett - An Earl Grey and Lemon Puff fuelled Mad-Wirral-Bohemian artist/ illustrator - and parallel sensitive, space gazing ambassador for universal peace and harmony!

Other than that - who I am, where I've been and what I've done with my life so far - I'd rather leave to my tatty art efforts to explain... should they ever gain satisfactory completion of course! But, hey, life y'know... there's always so much to do isn't there? And it's all too short really...

To my mind the most important thing is to be nice to everyone and do what you can for the good of all things. Make sure you have lots of fun, while you can, but always remember to be careful and sensitive to everyone else. Regard every single person you meet, without exception, with the same respect you would wish to receive if you were in their shoes, and if you mess up, say sorry and keep on trying to do better! A perfectly simple sentiment that I hope shines through my work like a great big beautiful smile!!!

Felicity Jayne is a collection of bright colourful illustrations and small gifts from the imagination of Jayne Turner.

Jayne studied Textile Design at Manchester Metropolitan University during which time she grew a love for drawing buildings, shops and landmarks that she liked. Her illustrations feature her local Oxton Village, her home City Liverpool, and her Capital City London, as well as other places she likes to visit. Her Illustrations also become merchandise too, as she loves to develop her drawings into quirky gifts for you to keep or to send to family and friends of the places you live, visit or just love!

Oxton Artists exhibiting in 2011 _ Roger Sinek

Roger Sinek is from Zimbabwe, and has been taking photographs with some serious intent since aged 11. He originally came to Liverpool to study architecture and play drums. These days he does personal work and undertakes commissions between working at Tate Liverpool. He exhibits regularly with the Soup collective and the Oxton Artists.

"I believe photographs are abstract, because freezing an instant is unnatural, and there are ways the camera sees things we cannot. I'm interested in essence and resonance. Seeking the universal in the ephemeral. I like ambiguity, to allow space for the imagination. There should be a remove from the literal, an image not a recording."

Oxton is where I've lived since 1983.

Art is very important to me - necessary and uplifting, other people's more than mine! The Fair is my fourth attempt at sharing my work with others.

I sit with pen and paper, not sure what comes first - a chicken and egg scenario. An idea, an object, a phrase that makes me smile. Little objects, symbols and forms with narrative held quietly within. Like sandcastles as the tide gets nearer.

I came to England to study illustration at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts in 1972; worked in publishing for several years; and moved to Oxton and brought up my three daughters. I now enjoy being a grandmother, although Poppy could easily take over my studio...

(speaking of Poppy, Poppy's Mum is one half of the catering company Chilli and Chive who will be doing the food over the weekend for the cafe)

Lynda Roberts attended the Glasgow School of Art before working in Canada & subsequently teaching on the Wirral.

Her multi media colleges are a personal visual record of places she has visited both here and abroad. In her recordings of our built environment, colour and texture are important elements providing layers to be visually explored by the viewer. Textile focal points are partially integrated to elaborate statements made in paint.

Jacqui Chapman, BA (hons) Fine Art is an established North West professional artist whose work is widely exhibited and admired.

The central theme to her work is the mercurial nature of memory itself, which is explored through method, materials and presentation. The sensation of landscape is recalled from her homeland, South Africa, in a metaphorical language through which feelings of loss caused by displacement are investigated. The idea that identity is shaped by territory thereby defining what we are, underpins her practice.

Theresia Cadwallader was born and brought up in Java studying civil engineering at Leeds University. She worked on building a university campus, bringing infrastructure to the jungles of Sulawesi and designing irrigation system for Lombok and Sumbawa. After taking a master degree in Irrigation Engineering at Southampton, she practised as an engineer in Jakarta and Sumatra. She then married and settled in Oxton. She continued working as a water engineer in the North West for a few years. She brought up her family in Oxton and studied fine art and jewellery design at the Wirral Met, completed her BTEC in 2009 with Distinction.

Theresia’s work includes painting, prints and jewellery. All her work combines a strong feeling for earth and stones, often geometric with rigorous design skills, and influenced by her early years among the colours and sounds of Indonesia.

Prizes: Individual Award prize (2nd place) for Inspired By... 2009 arts and crafts competition by Liverpool Museums and V&A.

1250 people came, enjoyed the fair, just by looking or bought from us to take home and appreciate later, enjoyed food from the cafe provided by Chilli and Chive, Green Eats and Green Community Shop and Centre and bought little handmade creations from the junior Oxton Artists, appreciated the music from Eight or from Lotzie Weaver, listened to the Wirral Alliance of Poets and Eleanor Rees, drew and created for the art prize or created a hat with Daisy Dawes.

Oxton Art Fair needs young people aged 14 to 16

Oxton Art Fair needs young people aged 14 to 16 to enter Ken Peacock’s art prize at the Williamson from 10 to 2pm tomorrow.The art prize is open to children who produce an artwork in the gallery. Paper, pencils & inspiration provided. Categories are 5-8, 9 -13 & 14-16. At the moment, loads of contenders for the younger categories but none for the older ones.Prize for the one judged in each category to be the best.3 independent judges and prize ceremony will be at 3.30pm.

Please pass this on to anyone with teenagers and we hope to see you at the show...we had about 500 in today and 350 at the opening last night.

Tomorrow there will also be a workshop for under fives with Daisy Dawes, local author and former modelmaker (she worked on the first Harry Potter) 10.30 to 11.30, poetry reading from Eleanor Rees at 2pm, Music from 2.45 til 3.30 and then the prize ceremony, with the preceedings ending at 4pm.

There will be cafe from Green Eats and The Green Community shop and centre will be doing teas and coffees and chocolate, advent calendars...

During Victoria’s reign, Oxton changed from being a small collection of agricultural cottages to a growing and prosperous community of businessmen, merchants, farmers, shopkeepers and tradesmen. In the process, Oxton Village developed its own distinctive features and a culture that is still alive today.

Much of what Oxton has to offer is clearly visible. But it has many more secretive parts and stories, that are best explored slowly in the company of an Oxton Society Guide.

As part of the Oxton Art Fair, the Oxton Society are offering you a special walk around Oxton led by one of the Guides on Saturday 20th November. The walk will last about an hour starting in the centre of Oxton Village at 11 am, next to the post box, by the Oxton Society notice board and ending at the Oxton Art Fair at the Williamson Art Gallery.

7th annual Oxton Art Fair

For the 7th year, the Oxton Artists are taking over 4 gallery rooms at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead for their annual Oxton Art Fair on the weekend of the 20 and 21st of November. The fair has a wonderful reputation of showing a mixture of artists who exhibit regularly in Liverpool and beyond, and those who only participate in the Oxton Art Fair, exhibiting a balance of contemporary art and photography alongside craft and design in a relaxed, friendly environment. There is plenty opportunity to talk to and buy directly from 19 local artists, designers and craftspeople so bring your chequebook!

All the artists lived in Oxton at the time of joining the group although a few have moved away and still return to exhibit. Some have exhibited recently as part of a sister project called The Six Rooms Gallery in Argyle Street, Birkenhead. Our exhibitors this year are Alan Chape, Alison Bailey Smith, Daniel James, Desdemona McCannon, Eimear Kavanagh, Eleanor Suggett, Jacqui Chapman, Janine Suggett, Jayne Turner, Judith Brown, Lisa Waldman, Liz Hadwin Glover , Lynda Roberts, Marie Mairs, Mark Wayne Barrett, Patsy Taylor, Roger Sinek, Sherilyn Halligan and Theresia Cadwallader.

There is a lovely café available and the whole exhibition space is fully accessible for all. This year, our café is provided by The Green Community Shop & Centre and two local catering companies. Both caterers have a long association with the fair. “Chilli and Chive” who will be catering for the café on Saturday, is part owned by Melanie Routledge, daughter of Janine Suggett and sister of Eleanor Suggett who are both exhibiting in the fair for the 3rd time. Green Eats is run by Nicola Burns who has been involved with helping with the fair since 2004. The show is very much involved with the community of Oxton and always maintains links with local businesses, local schools and community groups. This year, the Oxton Artists are hoping for a wider audience than ever as they have partnered with the Liverpool Independents and the Liverpool Design Festival as well as running The Big Draw at the Williamson Art Gallery for the public on the 24th of October. The fair is run and financed by the artists and has generated huge interest over the years from the press and public alike.

There are many free activities organised within the event including poetry reading, an art competition in memory of Ken Peacock - one of the orginal Oxton Artists, a stall with artwork for sale by the children of the Oxton Artists and a visit from “Fred” star of Get Ahead Fred” as well as a history walk around Oxton.

The Slightly Light Night is an evening public viewing planned for the 14th of October in Birkenhead of 2 venues that are part of the Liverpool Independents. The temporary gallery space in 26,Argyle Street, Birkenhead called The Six Rooms Gallery will be open from 5.30 until 8pm and will be showing the work of 12 Wirral artists curated by Oxton Artist Theresia Cadwallader. The permanent gallery space housed in the Laurie Centre, on Exmouth Street will be open from 7 until 10pm showing the current exhibition Zero Eye Candy curated by Simon Mack and showcasing the work of local and international artists. The event has been organised by Oxton Artist, Alison Bailey Smith and Simon Mack with the help from both venues.

The evening event is a scaled down version of the Light Night and Long Night events that have been so successful in the last few years in the galleries and museums of Liverpool. This collaboration between The Six Rooms Gallery and The Laurie’s is the result of the greater communication between art venues and artists based in the Wirral. Eventually, there is the hope that the Slightly Light Night could develop to encompass more galleries and museums based in the Wirral if the event carries on in future years. There is the potential to have the Slightly Bright Night in spring.

At the evening event, there will be other artists representing the many other events and galleries in the Wirral, including The Wirral Open Studios (organised by Micheline Robinson in November), The Oxton Art Fair (20th and 21st of November) and the artists of the 3rd exhibition at The Six Rooms Gallery as well as information about The Big Draw at the Williamson Art Gallery on the 24th of October organised by Oxton Artist, Marie Mairs of the Oxton Artists.

The Six Rooms Gallery currently has work by Oxton Artists, Marie Mairs, Eimear Kavangah, Theresia Cadwallader, Daniel James and Alison Bailey Smith on show until the 5th of October.

We have a brand new logo incorporating a tree design by Desdemona McCannon (orginally used as part of her designs for her lamps and then used as an element in her design for the poster for The Secret Shop in May) with medallion framing and lettering by Eleanor Suggett. We have are listed with Independents as part of the 3 month festival and a few of us will be exhibiting in a second Wirral based project by another Oxton Artist, Theresia Cadwallader called the 6 Rooms Gallery in Birkenhead beautiful Hamilton Square, diagonally oppostite the train station there, providing great links to Liverpool and beyond.

After 6 months in the Williamson, Stan went for a week or so to Canning Street then off to St Saviours school where he got lots of letters from the kids. Then he headed to Birkenhead Park for a week and a bit in the sunshine at the Visitors Centre as part of a community recycling exhibition.

We have lost a dear friend, Ken Peacock...one of the original Oxton Artists, gentleman and generous heart, such an interesting life.

Daniel James said of him "ken was such a kind hearted man. Some may not be aware that Ken was the youngest sergeant major in the royal marines. He trained Princess Anne and was in charge of guard duty on the royal yacht Brittania. His sketch books are some of the most detailed I’ve ever seen. He will leave a large hole in our group."

Secret Gardens of Oxton

Desdemona, Judith and I will be at 7 Rose Mount in The Secret Shop.

Lisa Waldman and Theresia Cadwallader will selling their jewellery in the gardens and my sculpture Electra will be with my commissioned sculpture Eurydice in one of the gardens on Victoria Mount.

Many people who come to the show are not aware of the work that goes behind the scenes to make the Oxton Art Fair the success it is and has become. It is a group run show and it was worth specifying what everyone does. There hasn't been an opportunity to acknowledge this in detail earlier.

Eleanor Suggett has worked very hard both this year and last year,
designing and arranging the printing of the invitations, posters, flyers and bio plaques as well as doing the fantastic invite for the Oxton Society celebration. She also took wonderful minutes that even had pictures - a plus for a group of visual artists. Elley also worked very hard during The BIG DRAW in October.

Marie worked tirelessly on all the organisation for The Big Draw, did
the photo-shop work on Dan's image of the group to add herself and Lisa into the group photo and all the work on the Oxton Artist website. She also presented a pen and ink demonstration in the demonstration area

Patsy has QUIETLY bought the wine and dealt with the empties afterwards for several years. She arranged for the Deputy Mayor to visit as well as asking Karl at the Williamson to meet and greet the dignatories. Mr Patsy, Kevin was also a tireless promotor of our event on Facebook and is always available to help at the bar.Patsy also took down our archive display in the foyer.

Lisa made the name tags and produced the invaluable e-flyer for us all to invite our contacts with the help of her partner, David Dunlop. She promoted our event on her website and on Facebook.

Judith, inspite of being very busy with teaching and all the fairs she
does has taken minutes, organised the demonstrations, promoted our event on her website and on Facebook.

Theresia has done minutes, hosted a meeting, created the layout, and helped to liaise with the Williamson. She suggested The Singh Twins as our invited guests and contacted them about opening our event as well as arranging a meeting for us at her home prior to the event so they could see images of all the artists work. She also arranged (with Judith) for Henry Bird to play his blues on Sunday. She promoted our event Facebook. She also came and delivered food and Ibuprofen when I was sick last week before the show. Above and beyond the call of duty. She also demonstrated her skills in origami and came in specially to clean up after the Big Draw.

Des has hosted our meetings and our social in January, creating lovely food for us all, done demos at the Big Draw and the Oxton Art Fair. She sourced paper and equipment, she promoted our event on her website and on Facebook. She helped tidy up the Big Draw pictures at the end of our fair.

Janine came in to The Williamson and cut paper in readiness for The Big Draw and was a big draw at the Big Draw, she looked after all the wonderful pictures produced on the day so we could present them at our show, she has been an extra car available to call on to get supplies and certainly helped Eleanor with all her commitments to the group. She must also be remembered for bringing her delicious home cooking to meetings to feed the hungry artists.

Roger helped Dan with the group photo and was on the selection panel and hosted the selection panel meeting at his home as well as collecting work from the Williamson from the candidates. He also helped record The Big Draw and the Oxton Art Fair, even forgetting to take an image of his own display (anyone who has one please send it to Roger...)

Dan took care of the group photo and to what great results! He also gave a talk about the Secret Garden of the Williamson. Lots of people were discussing this all weekend.

Ken was not as capable of doing much this year but in previous years (even last year when he was ill) he has helped others with their display, created 2 A Boards. He was on the selection panel this year.

Eimear as a new person was continually offering to help and did do the distribution list, she helped with cutting paper and preparing for the Big Draw.She promoted our event on her own website.

Lynda has been our treasurer for several years.She has not wanted to be treasurer but has continued on and always giving us our receipts and paying bills on time.She also donated inks for The Big Draw.

Sherilyn was on the selection panel to choose the new artists for 2009 and her daughter Leanne has always been a helpful co-opted member of the bar team with Kevin and Sue.

Jayne bought the lovely bouquets of flowers for the Singh Twins.

Liz helped with the cafe and helped with photography for the Big Draw.She also arranged for her husband, Tim Glover to play at the opening. Tim was going play solo but arrived with a full band! She also helped keep the demo/workshop area neat and tidy. She helped take down all The Big Draw pictures.

Alan has done layout in previous years and has done alot of photography as well as posting photos on the internet and sending images to journalists at request. Sue, Mrs Alan has always been a ready hand at the bar for our Friday night openings.

Mark designed and worked on the Ox for the Oxton Society celebrations which was a feature of this year's show. The Ox has had an extended stay at the Williamson but will hopefully be travelling to St Saviour's church soon. We exhibit there at The Secret Gardens of Oxton in 2006 (I think)so that completes the circle.

Mark Emptage, although not exhibiting this year, attended meetings and helped the other artists who needed help setting up their exhibition, from unloading, moving furniture to hanging work on the wall and more.

All of the group distributed flyers and posters throughout Merseyside, people found the flyers in all the right places. It obviously worked with 1500 visiting.

Thanks also to Tom for transporting the Ox from it's stable of creation to the Williamson and for providing the hollow doors for the armature (internal structure).

We are a group run show and the Oxton artists who contributed to the show made it a huge success by showing their lovely work and by helping with the arrangements, website and print and all the other jobs that are needed to bring it off.. In addition we all also had support from others for the bar at the opening, for looking after us at home and holding down the fort and allowing us to rant and moan.

We had loads of help from significant others, friends, parents, our kids, local businesses from the community including Green Eats, The Green Community Shop and Centre, Pete from the Deli, musicians namely Tim Glover with Rattlebus, Rebecca Joy Sharp and Henry Bird),Tom from Oxton House Clearances, Wirral Environmental Network, local press mainly Wirral Champion, Billy Butler and Matt Hurst, to the Singh Twins for opening the show and saying all the right things and to the Deputy Mayor and his Wife, Alan and Cath Jennings, and a special thanks to Karl, Colin, Pat, Graeme, Lindsay, Jim....from the Williamson - YOU WERE WONDERFUL and WE THANK YOU ALL!

As many of you are aware, Chris had a stroke earlier this year and we chose as a group to exhibit his work in his absence as a gesture of support. He has moved away from Oxton to Birmingham but still has strong ties with the group many of whom were taught by him or have known him for years so I thought it would be great to share this news here. Chris's work will be on exhibition in Old Joint Stock building, Temple Row west, in Birmingham starting on November 17th. Alison Bailey Smith, Oxton Artist is a finalist in the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce's Environmental Art Award for Electra, a sculpture made in 2008 an exhibited at the Oxton Art Fair last year. The winner will be announced at a special dinner on the 26th of November at the Anglican Cathedral

Alison originally trained in Jewellery at Edinburgh College of Art but her work crosses jewellery, costume & sculpture.. She has worked with recycled materials for 20 years and this year she will be showing her new range of “Junk Jewellery”. Her pieces are in museum collections & private collections around the world. She was been appointed arts liaison officer for 2Bio Ltd in Liverpool in October 2008 and has also instigated a new creative networking event called “With These Hands”.

Ox called Stan Happy to be ready for the Oxton Art Fair

The 30th Anniversary of the Oxton Society falling on the Chinese Year of the Ox seemed the perfect opportunity for Oxton to acquire its' very own ox statue (Oxton is so named after the Old Norse name for the area when Oxen grazed) in a style similar to the popular Superlambananas that are now so synonymous with Liverpool.

Discussions between Kevin Donovan (Oxton Society), Louise Jones (creator), Mark Wayne Barrett (designer and Oxton Artist) and Alison Bailey Smith (Oxton Artist) looking at several ways to celebrate the anniversary concluded in the initial fun idea of an "Oxbanana" which was later adjusted in favour of a more straight forward ox with it's own uniquely stylised design.

While Mark worked on a design that would emphasise the youthful, happy, bounding ox he saw in the Oxton Society's own illustration, the name for the ox came in a different discussion between Mark and Kevin over a proposed cartoon strip for the Oxton Society Newsletter in which Kevin suggested a possible series of observations on village life from a character like "Ox Stan" ! Instead of the little old man Kevin was proposing Mark turned it immediately into " Ox Stan - the Happy Oxton Ox " and formulated the final look of the design he was after.

With help from Alison and technician Roy Lewis the three built the frame for Stan from two interior doors and wire mesh covered in papier mache and painted with further help from local children.

The plan ultimately is to strengthen the structure with fibre glass moulding and hopefully make Stan a more substantial showpiece for the village of Oxton in the future.

The Ox will be unveiled in the gallery on a special event at the Williamson (sorry, tickets only) and then available fopr the public on Sunday.

If you click on this post's heading it will take you to our listing with the Liverpool Design Festival programme,we are partnered with the Liverpool-wide festival, with various events around the city and us. If you are unsure of how to get to the Williamson Art Gallery from Liverpool, please look at my previous postings. There are several train stations within about 15 minutes walk of the gallery, Hamilton Square, Conway Park, Birkenhead Park or Central Station. With a bus station nearest to Conway Park, if you plan to take a bus that is probably the best station to get off at. There are also buses through the tunnel. For a pleasant walk, you take the train to Birkenhead Park and walk diagonally though Birkenhead Park and up Slatey Road. Or you could come by ferry to Woodside and get a bus or taxi. Best bet is to get in touch with MerseyTravel for a route that suits your needs!

Taxis from the train station would probably be about £4.

As well as visiting our show, you might care to walk into Oxton Village to visit the shops, pubs and cafes but don't forget we will have a lovely cafe offered by The Green Community Shop and Centre and Green Eats on Saturday and by Pete's deli with the The Green Community Shop on Sunday. We will have music from Rebecca Joy Sharp on the harp on Saturday and from Henry Bird on Sunday. We will also be offering a new service via Wirral Environmental Network who will wrap any of your purchases for you for a small fee in recycled eco wrapping.

The Big Draw (as part of the national Campaign for Drawing),is organised by Oxton Artist, Marie Mairs, and will involve Oxton Artists and many local artists on Sunday 11th of October at the Williamson Art Gallery 11 until 4. Lovely event last year, everyone got down on their knees to do pipette drawing huge rolls of paper on the floor in the gallery or on the pavement to do chalk drawing or wire drawing with Marie Louise Williams inspired by Emma Rodgers' sculpture exhibition. CAFE!!!

Daniel is constantly looking to re-interpret culture around him. Previously a commercial photographer he retrained as a fine artist. MARK WAYNE BARRETT - Mark studied illustration & has a great interest in comic book art & childrens books. He is currently developing artwork for a children’s book by a local writer.

Judith Brown - BA Hons Fashion & Textiles From a textiles background, Judith stitches with wires to create intricate yet feminine jewellery. This year she has added three new ranges to her collections, Vintage Noir, Vintage Sparkle and Blossom.

Theresia Cadwallader - Born and brought up in Java, Theresia studied civil engineering at Leeds University. She worked on building a university campus in Sulawesi, bringing infrastructure to the jungles of Garugu, and designing irrigation for Lombok and Sumbawa. After taking a masters degree in irrigation engineering at Southampton, she practised as an engineer in Jakarta and Sumatra. She continued working as a water engineer in the North West for a few years. She then married and brought up a family in Oxton, and studied fine art and jewellery design at Wirral Met. Theresia’s work includes painting, prints and jewellery. All her work combines a strong feeling for earth and stones, often geometric with rigorous design skills, and influenced by her early years among the colours and sounds of Indonesia. This year Theresia was awarded 2nd place Inspired By ..2009 Individual Award Arts and Crafts competition organised by Liverpool Museums and V&A.

ALAN CHAPE -Alan Chape has lived & worked on Merseyside since 1968. He has developed his photography following his retirement in 2000. He specialises in architectural subjects, particularly the townscape & buildings of Liverpool, Wirral & Oxton, & rural landscapes. He also has catalogues for Nice, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Singapore, Tuscany, Andalucía, Rome, Berlin, Cracow, Palma, Sardinia, Brittany, North Wales, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Sussex & London. Since 2008 he has also been developing his work on abstract collages using the interplay of different colours to create different effects.

MARK EMPTAGE (not exhibiting fully this year)- As a dyslexic scholar, Mark Emptage fumbled through his formative years at school near Caernarfon He trained as a Chef, did a tour of duty in the Welsh Guards and worked as a milkman. He had some ‘cartoons’ published in the company magazine and produced pen and ink illustrations for an insurance company. In 1990, he designed a mural for a bar in Chester He now works in cereal production and has used his photography to update training manuals. Now he is 'almost' grown up, he finds himself drawn to digital photography techniques.

SHERILYN HALLIGAN BA Hons Fine Art- Sherilyn Halligan is a local artist who studied Fine Art at Wirral Metropolitan Colleg, graduating with an honours degree from John Moores University in 2001. Since then she has been working freelance for Tate Liverpool delivering the family programme and collaborating on projects with our other artists. She is currently an art tutor working part-time for the art-department at Wirral Met. Her work in painting and collage is an exploration of colour and texture relationships. Informed by the landscapes of places near and far. Working in a very exploratory way she endeavours to capture the essence of that place which has capture her imagination.

DANIEL JAMES BA Hons Fine Art
Daniel has recently graduated from Wirral Met. He previously received a Triple Distinction in Photography, a Diploma in HE Media Studies and gained a Distinction in Foundation Art and Design. He is currently working on his third NHS commission.

EIMEAR KAVANAGH -
Eimear is a Textiles and Surface Pattern Design Graduate. She works in mixed media and having travelled throughout parts of India she has become guided by the ideas, customs and art of its societies. Her recent commissions have included backdrops for stage/set design, Mural paintings in India and London, a CD album cover and a private collection of paintings for a home-owner in Sydney, Australia.

Marie Mairs BA Hons Graphic design, MA Multi media- Marie has worked commercially as an illustrator for books & magazine. DESDEMONA MCCANNON – wwww.lemonmerchant.co.uk Desdemona has a 1st class degree in English Literature, & 1st class degree in Graphic Design & Illustration. After working as an illustrator for five years, she studied for an M.A. in ‘Sequential Illustration & Design’ in Brighton. She has worked as a children’s book illustrator most notably with Bloomsbury Children’s books. She taught Graphic Design at Wirral Met until the opportunity came up to work in Tokyo where she designed characters & illustrated for international clients. She joined the staff at North Wales School of Art in 2003 and currently teaches illustration and visual culture there.

KEN PEACOCK - I have roamed this beautiful world now for many years with sketch book, camera, and pen. In my studio as my paintings develop and with my sketch-books and photographs by my drawing board to refer to, the rhythms within the compositions become stronger and my field work becomes a reality. I keep going till I get it right but then there are probably still five things to do and a painting can be on my easel for over a year.

LYNDA ROBERTS D.A. Post D.A. (Textile Design) - Lynda attended the Glasgow School of Art before working in Canada & subsequently teaching Art on Wirral. Her multi media collages are a personal visual record of places she has visited both here & abroad. In her recordings of our built environment, colour & texture are important elements providing layers to be visually explored by the viewer. Textile focal points are partially integrated to elaborate statements made in paint.

ROGER SINEK
Roger hails from Zimbabwe, and has been taking photographs with some serious intent since age 11. Having come to Liverpool to study architecture he stayed on to play drums, somehow escaping fame. These days he does personal work and professional commissions between working at Tate Liverpool. His work has been published internationally on and in numerous books, posters, magazines and CDs - from the NME, through Fine Art catalogues to Terence Conran's Book of Design. He started exhibiting in Galleries in recent years, showing regularly with Soup around the North West and joining the Oxton Artists in 2007.

ELEANOR SUGGETT
After graduating with a first class Honours from Central Saint Martins in July of 2007, Eleanor returned to Merseyside, where she lives and works, probably drinks far too much coffee, and runs a small design consultancy. Her work has been exhibited in nationally as well as in New York and Paris. From her reputable multi-disciplinary studio, she provides a diverse range of tailor made designs for the publishing and creative industry. Traditional yet innovative, she specialises in typography, pattern and illustration, importantly working with comprehensive, ethical and eco-friendly printing techniques.

As a print maker, I enjoy the qualities of drawing, & use this as a basis for all of my work, which at the moment is a series playful illustrations, & monotype. I enjoy 'accidents', never afraid of experimenting with new & old techniques. I love black & white, but all other colours are welcome. "

She has made things since she could hold a needle, loving beautiful fabrics for their own sake, enjoying the fascinating process of constructing & shaping something from a flat piece of material.

I love what the city contains, its architecture, objects, people, colours, signs and conversations. I see the city as a place full of stories, journeys and ideas. DESDEMONA MCCANNON – www.lemonmerchant.co.uk Desdemona has a 1st class degree in English Literature, & 1st class degree in Graphic Design & Illustration. After working as an illustrator for five years, she studied for an M.A. in ‘Sequential Illustration & Design’ in Brighton. She has worked as a children’s book illustrator most notably with Bloomsbury Children’s books. She taught Graphic Design at Wirral Met until the opportunity came up to work in Tokyo where she designed characters & illustrated for international clients. She joined the staff at North Wales School of Art in 2003 and currently teaches illustration and visual culture there.

Success for Wirral Met Students as they scoop first and second prize in the Liverpool Museum Competition 'Inspired By'. Student, Barry Canning-Eaton won first prize for his jewellery set inspired by dinosaurs and constructed in ceramic and silver. Barry is also a sculptor and is currently renting studio space where he produces original sculptures and jewellery pieces. Barry hopes to continue this work and become more recognised for his original pieces. Student, Theresia Cadwallader won second prize for her origami earrings, she also constructed a box from the competition form which the judges really liked. She also made a necklace inspired by Terry Duffy's exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, constructed from silver and titanium. After the course Theresia hopes to continue designing and making jewellery and exhibit more widely across the UK and eventually world-wide. Both Barry and Theresia are on the second and final year of The First Diploma in Art and Design- Jewellery part-time course in the Arts School. Les Rowe, Art Foundation Lecturer commented, “We are just delighted that two of our students have won first and second prize they deserve it for all their hard work.”

Eleanor joined us last year for the first time to exhibit in the Oxton Art Fair and produced our wonderful poster and invitation which was much complimented and many people sited Eric Gill as her inspiration. She then went on to design the Oxton Society's posters and flyers for the Secret Gardens of Oxton which was reminiscent of William Morris. We are hoping she will pull it off again this year producing another collectable poster. She has also been approached by the Oxton Socity to create their invitation for their 30th year celebrations.

KEN PEACOCK - I have roamed this beautiful world now for many years with sketch book, camera, and pen. In my studio as my paintings develop and with my sketch-books and photographs by my drawing board to refer to, the rhythms within the compositions become stronger and my field work becomes a reality. I keep going till I get it right but then there are probably still five things to do and a painting can be on my easel for over a year.

brings out the music in one.

Ken is one of our original exhibitors and has returned this year after a year off due to ill health. Despite his illness, he helped us with some of the hanging of the last show. If you get a chance, when you visit the show take a look at Ken's lovely sketch books of his drawings in the field, Ken is always hiking around everywhere with his field books and backpack in tow.

Eimear is a Textiles and Surface Pattern Design Graduate. She works in mixed media and having travelled throughout parts of India she has become guided by the ideas, customs and art of its societies. Her recent commissions have included backdrops for stage/set design, Mural paintings in India and London, a CD album cover and a private collection of paintings for a home-owner in Sydney, Australia.

We will be joined this year by new members, Eimear Kavanagh, Jayne Turner and Liz Hadwin as well as returning previous exhibitors Dan James and Ken Peacock, who will join Judith Brown, Theresia Cadwallader, Alan Chape, Sherilyn Halligan, Marie Mairs, Janine Suggett, Eleanor Suggett, Desdemona McCannon, Patsy Taylor, Alison Bailey Smith , Mark Wayne Barrett, Lynda Roberts, Roger Sinek and Lisa Waldman, we may also be joined by Mark Emptage.

So it is looking like our biggest show ever, we will also be including archives to celebrate the 30 th anniversary of the Oxton Village conservation area and the Oxton Society. There will also be a special evening opening within our exhibition by invitation only.

I am planning to have a monthly get together in Moose Coffee in Oxton while we get started and possibly move to their larger venue at Woodside if we get too big. Secret Gardens of Oxton- Huge success and not too wet

The weather held mostly and it was not as hot as last year so comfortable to do alot of the gardens on show. Judith Brown and I managed 25 out of the 30 private gardens on offer. It was a lovely day and we caught up with most of the artists in the gardens including Marie Mairs, Eleanor Suggett whose words on slate are shown here, Theresia Cadwallader and Janine Suggett from the Oxotn Artists as well as the artist who meet in the Green Community shop and Centre called Re-Creation Studios, Michael Burns, Angela Hinchcliffe. As well as visual artists there were roaming poets and musicians.

This fantastic family event near Birkenhead, is even fuller this year with 30 private gardens open to the public in Oxton Village. In some of the gardens, there will be some of the Oxton Artists and other aristans displaying their wares.
